As I was reading the most recent Indy Week edition, I came across an article about a lawyer who fights for the rights of undocumented immigrants in NC.
With many states passing their own immigration legislations, it’s been easier for authorities to target illegal immigrants based on their appearance and North Carolina is no exception. Obama and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) have said that they will only target and deport high risk illegal immigrants. High risk meaning a threat to the US or the public. But ICE and local law enforcement officers have decided otherwise. They are arresting and deporting people for minor traffic violations, including driving without a license. A woman in Charlotte was arrested and put in deportation process for calling her local TWC office and providing a tax ID number instead of a social security number. Even just “looking Mexican” has become grounds for deportation. The undocumented do not have a voice against this injustice. Most don’t speak the language, we fear repercussions for ourselves and our families, we don’t know our rights, and we are not told our rights. It’s civil rights warfare and almost no one is protesting.
Marty Rosenbluth is doing something about it and he is doing it pro bono. He provides a much-needed service to us, allowing us to have a voice in the courtroom. He created the Immigrant Rights Project, a legal service funded by donations that represents undocumented immigrants.
